CLP Group’s 2008 Sustainability Report

CLP Group’s 2008 Sustainability Report is now online at:

CLP’s Sustainability Report describes their commitments, plans and performance in managing the challenges we face in order to sustain our business in a responsible manner, especially in the current financial and market turmoil. CLP's aim is to report successes and setbacks with equal honesty.

The CLP report was developed with input from report readers and writers, and includes a Global Reporting Initiative’s G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines content index and indicators. The full content was independently verified. New this year is a set of succinct video reports from CLP's senior management on a range of key issues such as climate change, air quality, safety and community investment.

CLP Group Issues 2007 Sustainability Report

CLP Group’s 2007 Sustainability Report was developed with input from report readers and writers, and includes a Global Reporting Initiative’s G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines content index and indicators. The full content was independently verified. New this year is a feature article “A Regional Dilemma” about the challenge of meeting the growing needs for energy in developing countries without devastating consequences to the climate. CLP offers a frank discussion on real experience in the Asia Pacific region.

Highlights include CLP’s December 2007 announcement of targets for dramatic reduction in emission intensity of the entire portfolio, in line with a global climate stabilisation scenario with less than 550 ppm concentration of carbon dioxide. Targets were set for 2010, 2020, 2035 and 2050. CLP also announced reaching its renewable capacity target of 5% three years ahead of schedule.

LNG Deal between PetroChina and Shell

Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to sell LNG to PetroChina from its Gorgon project off the coast of Western Australia. The deal is for one million metric tons of LNG a year over 20 years. It is estimated that Gorgon has 40 trillion cubic feet of gas. Shell's partners in the Gorgon project are Cheveron (50% stake) and ExxonMobil (25% stake). The cost of the project, which is still being developed, is $9 billion and rising. (The Wall Street Journal, 9-5-07)

Center Opens Hong Kong Office

The Center for Environment, Commerce & Energy has opened a Hong Kong office to enhance our work in Southeast Asia. The Hong Kong Office will work closely with our Mainland China Office. There are unique issues in Hong Kong due to its unique history. And although it has reunited with the Mainland, there are many environmentaland energy issues that will have to be addressed. The Center plans to provide its expertise to assist with practical solutions to global warming and the many other environmental issues facing all countries.
